Loading docks are a critical component to businesses operating in the industrial warehousing and distribution space. Warehouse loading docks allow logistic vehicles to receive and deliver goods and are important for standard operation in many warehouses but make no mistake: it is essential that proper safety precautions are considered and observed when operating around a loading dock.
According to a 2026 OSHA report about 25% of all warehouse accidents occur at the loading dock, and for every injury there are close to 600 near misses. In just 2018, nearly 6,600 worker absences due to injury or illness were linked to loading docks. So how can you take steps to prevent these incidents from happening? Let’s go over it.
The first and most directly effective way to prevent loading dock related incidents is to install and maintain proper safety equipment. The first and most obvious of which is a dock impact barrier or safety chains should be installed on every potential fall spot that is of 4 feet or more, per OSHA federal guidelines on “Protection for Wall Openings and Holes”. Other barriers or signs should be installed if extra protection is deemed necessary.
Gates and guardrails can serve as barriers towards any accidents from personnel entering an in-use loading dock, or falling off the edge, and communication lights can also be installed to indicate the presence of an in-use dock to both truck drivers and employees loading trucks. A safety feature like these needs to be both quick and convenient in order to facilitate frequent and easy use. Consider safety features for the outside of the warehouse as well. Another serious concern at the loading dock is truck creep, when a truck is left idle and moves away without operator intent. Truck restraints prevent a truck from pulling away from a loading dock while an operator is still inside, preventing a serious safety hazard. Mt. Zion Material Handling recommends the Kelly APS 2000 truck restraint for this purpose, one of our top selling products. It comes with a low-profile carriage and advanced communication system that makes it superior to the standard impact-style vehicle restraint. Dock seals and shelters should also be installed on a dock position to prevent building damage, weather interfering with product, and protect operator safety.
A good safety setup will serve to minimize accidents, ensure OSHA compliance, and promote an efficient and product workflow. Mt. Zion has many products and services on offer to cover all your safety needs. Let our team of trained professionals provide you with the utmost in quality warehouse solutions!
